How do I change the Rotors and Disc Breaks on a Ford Ghia myself and not going to a mechanic?

the basics are like this...

raise and support vehicle

remove tires

remove the caliper mounting bolts, lift caliper away from rotor being careful not to damage the brake fluid hose

remove brake pads from caliper

compress caliper piston

insert pads

reassemble unit

it's not that hard

get a manual

a worthy note though is caliper pistons made of steel tend to be reusable while plastic ones don'tHow do I change the Rotors and Disc Breaks on a Ford Ghia myself and not going to a mechanic?simple, get a manual, follow instructions, job done. Should only need basic tools, socket set, screwdrivers etc, oh! and a jack and stands.

How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?

Get someone who knows what they're doing work with you because one mistake and you can screw up the ABS system and that will cost you a bundle. How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?It should not be that hard, the only difficulty you might run into, is if they are rusted in place. If they will not come off easily, start by tapping them with a hammer around the outside and progressively hammer harder till they loosen up.

In my opinion doing a break job yourself, is the best value for a do-it yourselfer. The labor they charge for a easy 2 hour job is crazy. How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?I would recommend that, since this is your first time, you not do it by yourself but have someone you know help you. Just make sure they know what they are doing. It isn't very hard but just to be safe, get someone with experience. How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?brakes are one of the most integral parts of a vehicle. i do not recomend you doing a brake job by your self if you do not know what to do allready. too many things can go wrong. if you damage a caliper you would have no idea of it and not be able to stop. so i would have someone that knows how to do it show you what and what not to do. and once you take the calipers off and change rotors, you have to reset the caliper and if you do that wrong you can destroy it and have no sign of it until your brakes fail and you try and panic stop and crash. get some help. or even better get a manual. they are made for the do it yourselfer, theyll tell you what to do and how to do it, rather then why you do it and other methods and the mechanics and all that like i learn from my 800$ automotive textbooks. a chilton manual is about 20$.How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?2002 should be really easy.

The hardest part is taking off the rotors and brakes.

Once they are all off, just re-assemble and make sure to gravity bleed the brakes.

While you are there change the brake pads also. How hard would it be to change the rotors by myself on a 2002 acura rsx?Not very hard if you know what you are doing. If not, have someone who does know help you, not do it for you. Working on your car is the best way to learn every little detail about it, plus it gives you knowledge for later on. My best friends dad is a mechanic so if I need help with something he is the first person I ask. You learn so much. Good luck.

How hard is it to change brake rotors & pads on a 01 Silverado 4WD?

Any suggestions/reviews on basic aftermarket rotors and/or pads? How hard is it to change brake rotors %26amp; pads on a 01 Silverado 4WD?What's wrong with %26quot;stock%26quot;?

GM uses higher quality steel in their rotors than ANY aftermarket China made steel.

It's simple to replace rotors and pads.

    1) A good jack.

    2) A block of wood. (to hold the truck tires off the ground) Don't trust the jack by it's self!!

    3) 1 Big C clamp. (to compress the calipers)

    4) Lug wrench. How hard is it to change brake rotors %26amp; pads on a 01 Silverado 4WD?Absolutely not. If I'm not mistaken, those are hubless rotors that come right off after the calipers are removed. You may need to have the rotors turned (machined) if they have been rubbing metal to metal on the pads. Local parts houses usually do that for $5-10 each. How hard is it to change brake rotors %26amp; pads on a 01 Silverado 4WD?I don't know if you would gain a whole heck of a lot by going totally aftermarket with the rotors - your best bet is get a set of good replacements from the auto parts store, and look for higher performance pads. The replacements are very simple on your truck - pull off the caliper, and the rotors should come right off.

If you're dead set on aftermarket, I can personally recommend the SSBC rotors - I recommend the slotted, but not cross-drilled, since you're stopping a whole lot of weight when you brake, the cross-drills will tend to crack at the holes from the heat.

How hard is it to change the struts on a 90' Firebird, what has to be done?

Ive changed brakes, rotors, and that kind of thing, so was wondering how hard it would be to change the struts my self. How hard is it to change the struts on a 90' Firebird, what has to be done? You don't need a spring compressor to change the struts.. Your not removing spring.

Place a floor jack under the lower A arm, jack up, place stand under it.

Take wheel off, take caliper off (don't loosen the brake hose though) sit or hang caliper so its not pulling on brake line.

Open hood up, on each side of car is a strut tower with a black strut bearing mount with a cone looking thing on top.. Pop that cone shaped cover off.. Remove the large nut you see in there.

Now back to the wheel side. You have 2 large bolts holding strut to spindle.. Also the brake line is help to strut with a clip.. Remove that clip, then take the 2 strut to spindle bolts off.

Lift up on the strut to compress it and move it off the mount, now left it go down and just pull it out.

On new strut put top rod through 1st, hand start the top nut, then pull strut down and put 2 lower bolts on..

The lower bolts needs to be torqued to 125 ft lbs then turned 120 degrees more

Top nut is then torqued to 44 ft lbs

Put caliper and well back on.How hard is it to change the struts on a 90' Firebird, what has to be done?not to hard you will need some spring compressors, or you wont be abel to do it. just take all the bolts off to the strut, use 1 or 2 spring compressors for each side and compress the spring.

should be simple just be carful they can be dangerous and deadly if the compressor slips off.

  • How do you change rear rotors on a 1993 Honda accord?

i have the caliper off and removed the two screws securing it, but now it doesn't want to slide off. the caliper bracket is in my way but i am hesitant to remove it. any ideas? How do you change rear rotors on a 1993 Honda accord?repair manual, or try giving the rotor a tap with a black of wood. They may be rusted fast. How do you change rear rotors on a 1993 Honda accord? The rotor does not just slide right off. It is held on by two screws just like you said.

You have to go to sears or an automotive store and get an impact screw driver.

It is a big thick screw driver / hammer thing that has different size attachments that come with it. Put the right attachment in it, place the tool in the screw, just like your going to unscrew it, and hit the impact screw driver with a hammer while holding it firmly. (that's how it works) When you hit the tool, the force of the impact presses the tool firmly into the screw and rotates left or right, whatever you have it set to do.

Be sure to spray it with lubricating fluid before. And be sure you have it set to turn left.

Works like a charm. How do you change rear rotors on a 1993 Honda accord?http://www.digmyhonda.com/h/story.php?ti

all you need above but essentially it is.....

caliper bracket comes off with two bolts usually and is not a big chore, if you have the caliper already off, this will be easier than that. Just remove the bolts bolts, and it slides off. The rotor should then just slide right off. Hope that helps, best luck

How Do I change Brake rotors on Cavalier?

I have a 01 Cavalier with 155,000 miles and it vibrates when I step on brakes that I just replaced. Most folks sey its the rotors. Is it an easy job? Its a 2.2 L engine. Most shops want hundreds of dollars to do this job. Advance Auto Parts has them for 32.00. So please tell me it can be done without major tools and other complications. Thanks, MikesHow Do I change Brake rotors on Cavalier? You gotta take off the tire, brake caliper and the caliper bracket(2 screws in the back) . The Rotor should slide off because the caliper bracket and caliper hold the rotor in place. It might also be held on by some screws. The screws are easy to strip so I recommend using an impact gun. I think cavaliers don't have the screws on the rotors. How Do I change Brake rotors on Cavalier? What they said, and buy some brake cleaning spray to clean the protective oil off the new rotors, or the pads will glaze and won't work. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?

I have a 2000 BMW 323i. Anyone know on average how often I am supposed to change the brakes? (BMWs have to change the rotors as well as the pads everytime....so its really expensive.)How often are you supposed to change your brakes?BMW's have to change the rotors so often because they are %26quot;Soft%26quot; and the pads eat through them.

Your e46 BMW is equipped with pad sensors that will tell you when you are getting close to needing your next brake job done.

Just to inform yourself more about your 3 series you will find that http://www.e46fanatics.com is a great resource for your auto.

It is a good idea to check them once a month with a quick visual check.

Typically with alot of high way driving you can go alot longer without replacing your pads. If you do alot of city driving you will find that you must replace them more often.

Regardless it ultimately is left up to whether you do a lot of heavy braking or downhill driving. How often are you supposed to change your brakes? It all depends on the driving habits and the vehicle. There is no set period of time or mileage to overhaul brakes. Most vehicle have a little device that tells you via a warning light or a little metal tab that ride against the rotor when you apply the brakes and make a screeching sound until you let off the peddle. I have heard that about BMW's, yes very expensive. You might try an independent mechanic and see what he can do for you.How often are you supposed to change your brakes?roughly every 40-50,000 miles. you should replace your pads, and rotors only need to be replaces if damaged or warped. they should last a very long time.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 rotor turning clockwise.I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing? Was it Backfiring before you worked on it? If so, it sounds like it's jumped Timing.Does it still have the original Factory Nylon Sprocket on the Camshaft ? If so, one or more of the %26quot;Teeth%26quot; may have stripped off.One way to determine this is to remove the Valve Cover on the Driver's side of the Engine, remove the Spark Plug to the # 1 Cylinder, which is in the front of the Engine on the Driver's side, and bump the Engine over, without starting it. Put your Thumb over the Spark Plug Hole, and you'll feel the Compression build up when the Piston comes to the Top. With the Piston at the very Top, and the Distributor Rotor Button pointing at the # 1 Spark Plug Wire,[You'll have to remove the Distributor Cap to see that], and both Rocker Arms for #1 in the closed Position, look at the Timing Mark on the Harmonic Balancer on the bottom pulley of the Engine. It should be pointing somewhere close to the Timing Mark where you see the Timing Adjustment Settings. If it's not, and it's way off, then chances are that it's jumped Timing, and you're going to need a full Timing Kit, which consists of a Timing Chain, Camshaft Sprocket, Crankshaft Sprocket, and a Timing Cover Gasket. Everything on the front of the Engine has to come off to replace the Timing Set, so you want to make sure that's what it is before proceeding. I've done it, and I can tell you, it's a lot of work ! Make sure you have a Haynes Manual, and read it thoroughly before you start. That'll cost about $15, and will tell you exactly how to set the Timing, and replace the Timing Set. If you do it yourself, it'll cost about $50, maybe less, and it'll take several Hours, maybe a couple of evenings, if you're doing it by the Shadetree. If you pay a Repair Shop, it's going to cost around $250 to $350 easy, but make sure you know what you're doing before you attempt it.Try polkan47's Answer first.I hope he's right, cause it'll save you a lot of Hasle ! Hope this helps !I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?i agree with polkan47.their is a olds rocket 350 with a different fireing order but in your case it is 18436572 in clockwise rotation.I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?Yes, you have to dis-connect the brown wire behind the plastic cover on the firewall underneath the hood. Before timing it to ZERO timing provided the ECM computer is still hooked-up. Once you have the timing set on ZERO, re-connect the brown wire and you should be good to go.

Below is a search I did over @ fullsizechevy.com on setting the timing. See if, this can help you w/ your issue.

Good luck!I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?I own a shop, and since yours is this old, you probably have a worn out camshaft. The symptoms are: It runs fine until you give it gas %26amp; get it under a pull, and then it backfires through the intake (most common) or the exhaust. Remember; timing doesn't get off by itself, and one that jumps on the gears will ( 99% of the time) not run at all, and/or will backfire all the time, not just when you give it gas. The best way to diagnose this problem is to use a vacuum gage attached to manifold vacuum source. You are on the right track by thinking its in the ignition timing, and it could be if you changed the plug wires, and then the problem showed up. Other suggestions on how to set the timing is correct, but you will more than likely find the timing is dead on. The most common causes are: EGR system not functioning properly, Vacuum leak, Damaged valve springs or sticking valves, and the Intake gasket leaking. To properly diagnose the problem, I would suggest running a vacuum test, a compression test, and a leak down test. It will more than likely show up on the vacuum test, and you will need a chart to interpute the needle readings. Since you have replaced the plugs %26amp; wires, and cap %26amp; rotor, then if the engine has a lot of miles on it, then you more than likely have a worn camshaft.

One final thing that is not so common on these vehicles is; The distributor may be worn out. Remove the cap, grab hold of the rotor, and see if you can move it from side to side. There should be no, or very tiny amount of movement. When the bushing (in the top of the distributor) gets worn, the shaft will flop around, which opens %26amp; closes the air gap between the reluctor %26amp; magnetic pick-up. This will cause the ignition timing to be all over the place, and when you give it gas it will move to one side from the torque on it from the camshaft %26amp; oil pump. This will also (sometimes) wear the gear on the distributor that runs on the camshaft. If this happens, then its just like a rearend that has too much backlash in it, and it prematurely wears out the gear due to improper mesh between the two. The camshaft gear is much harder than the distributor gear, thus it doesn't wear it. This can be a serious problem as it will cause metal from the gear to be introduced into the oiling system. Any metal in the oil will wreak havoc on the bearings, cam %26amp; lifters, and rings. It can also severely damage the oil pump. I would pull the distributor out, and replace it with another one. If you use one that has been used before, then you must replace the distributor gear with a new one, or it will wear out pretty fast. This sometimes is the case with an engine that has a roller cam, and the cam is walking inside the block too much due to the thrust button/bearing wear. This will also cause the cam to walk enough for the timing chain to hit the block, and in some cases wear a hole in the block behind the chain %26amp; gear.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!I have a 89 silerado 350 efi and it back fires like when u give it gas timing how do i set the timing?First thing to check is that you don't have your wires crossed either on the spark plugs or the cap. This can happen quite easily and engine will do exactly what you describe. Check these carefully before getting too carried away

How do you change out a rotor on a 1980 Jaguar XJ6?

I have a 1980 XJ6 Jaguar that the rotor is rotten (from time is suppose) how do I change it out? Would I have to drop the axle? Serious answers pleaseHow do you change out a rotor on a 1980 Jaguar XJ6?It's not out of the question. If they are in-board and rusted to oblivion, then it will be an easier job to just take out the whole rear-end. Then you can work on it at a work bench. You have to disconnect the axles anyway, it's only a few more bolts and a heavy chunk. It will still not be close to an easy job though. I've seen the inboard rotor bolts break more, than come out in one piece. Soak it with penetrating oil and pray. How do you change out a rotor on a 1980 Jaguar XJ6?You need to be more specific about your problem. %26quot;Rotor%26quot; can mean a lot of different things. Where is it on your car? In the distributor, brakes, drive shaft, transmission, alternator, starter motor, fuel pump, oil pump, power steering, torque converter, etc.How do you change out a rotor on a 1980 Jaguar XJ6?I assume we're talking about the rear inboard brakes. The rotors can in theory be serviced in place. You would need to unbolt the half shaft, and remove rotor and caliper together. You will probably need to undo the exhaust to get proper access. When you replace them, try to find Brembo rotors, which have extra holes in the hub which allow you to unbolt the differential stub axle retainer. This allows you to pull the rotors with the stub axle. It might sound harder, but it's easier to get the rotor out and in when everything is mobile.

My feeling is that the most satisfying way to do this is to pull the whole rear axle, and use the opportunity to refresh the control arm bearings, shocks, half shaft joints, as well as the brakes.New seals for the diff, and hub bearings if you're ambitions. It's a fairly simple thing to do, although you need a transmission jack to deal with the weight (about 300+ lbs). The parts are cheap. Undo the exhaust, hand brake cable, brake hose, and trailing arms. Slide your jack underneath and take the weight off the mounts. Then unbolt them. You'll probably have to replace the trailing arm bushings, as they are usually impossible to budge (without damage) after many years of service.

Axle removal should be done with a stout set of jackstands supporting the rear of the body, and the front wheels on the floor. Don't ever try to remove the axle on a lift, as the car will become very nose heavy when the axle drops.

    On 2wd I agree w/smacking the rotor.

It's amazing how tough some of them are to break loose.

Sometimes even after a good PB soaking, it's bigger hammer time...2004 Lincoln Navigator: Can't get the RF rotor off to replace it. So if I was you before I start beating on the rotor I would find out from a dealer or a brake place like Midas. if nothing is holding it on you may have to beat the hell out of it to get it off just make sure before you start beating on it.2004 Lincoln Navigator: Can't get the RF rotor off to replace it. • How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?

I already have the new rotors but i dont excatly know all the steps to changing them.I know a good bit about what parts are what on the brake assembley. P.S if i dont use my breaks but i use my parking break to stop my car befor i change the rotors will the caliper close tightly when i take it off the rotor and do i have to bleed the breaks? How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?The front is very easy.

    Remove the wheel

    Remove the Caliper

    Remove the Caliper saddle

Clean new rotor with brake cleaner spray (to remove protective coating!)

Slide off old rotor, slide on new rotor

    Reinstall caliper saddle

    Compress caliper piston

    Reinstall caliper

    Rear Rotors:

    Same deal.

Only difference is that the rear caliper piston does not get compressed, instead you have to screw it in!!! You will see notches on the the piston. If you are lucky you can use needlenose pliers. Best bet is buy the universal rear brake piston tool at a car parts shop. Looks like a cube with a 3/8th inch rachet hole on each side and nubs along the outside. Find which nubs fit your piston and put a rachet on the opposing side. Press and turn clockwise to compress the piston.

Good luckHow do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?same way as you would have done in 1972.. remove the grease cap.. pull the cotter pin.. take off the spindel nut remove the callipers.. pull the rotors put in new bearings and seals and reassemble. nothings changed.... this isnt even close to being rocket science...

Oh and always compress the calipers when doing breaks... all the way they are self adjusting... and no you dont have to bleed em if you do it right...How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?Follow these step by step instructions:

http://www.alldatapro.com/alldata/PRO~V5How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?just take the calipers off and the rotors should just slip right off.if your just changing the rotors, then you wont have to bleed the brakes.hows the back brakes?maybe they need set up some.

96 Accord V6 running rough after cap & rotor change?...Timing issue?

I was waiting in a parking space for a friend for 10 minutes and my 96 accord was running hot (temp gauge at 3/4) and I noticed some stem under the hood. I checked under the hood and the fan was not on and I could see a hairline crack on the radiator causing the steam. I let it cool down and then drove home with the temp gauge fluctuating from normal (1/3) to hot (3/4). At home I sealed the crack with putty and filled the radiator back up with coolant (needed 1/2 a bottle). I waited 24 hours for the putty to seal and test drove it 15 minutes and the coolant was leaking slightly but not steaming as before. I parked it with the plan to replace the radiator the next day but when I tried to start it, it would not turn over. I eliminated fuel delivery, the electrical lights on dash worked when the ignition is at on position, and I checked the oil which showed no signs of white coffee residue (ie. head gasket/ head damage). I already had a new rotor and cap so I removed the old one which was very worn out and replaced it. I tried to start it up and now it reluctantly turned over but it was running really rough. I turned it off and pulled a plug and it had alot of black carbon build up with a strong gas odor and looked pretty worn even though I replaced them about 6 months ago. The oil looks clean of any white residue still. Does this seem like a timing issue possibly? I didn't think me replacing the rotor %26amp; cap would cause a timing problem since the rotor was removed by a screw and the shaft it was on seemed to be in a locked postion. On my car, I believe there is a bolt/screw under the cap on the block that adjusts the timing since my cap is secured in one postion and does not move. Does this seem like a timing issue from what I explained?....and can I adjust the timing myself or how much should that cost?96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?Do the basics, check the firing order, inspect and test the cables .96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?sounds to me like a firing order issue.if you have two wires in reverse of where they're supposed to be it will run just rough as hell and it will be hard to start.I would also take an ohm reading on the plug wires, it seems that they are not good, you shouldn't have a build up on them unless your burning oil. the other possibility is that you have a bad head gasket between cylinders,is it smoking white?96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue? Here is a common one that we all make every once in a while: You sure you didn't get a couple of the plug wires crossed up when you changed the Distributor cap:

    .

Also if your plugs are carbon-ed up they will need to be changed as well. Could be one or two of them fouling out on you.

    .

Also good idea while at it to change the plug wires as well:

I always follow a rule of thumb when doing a tune up on my vehicles: Change the plugs, change the plug wires, change the rotor cap, change the distributor cap, change the coil wire and change the coil. Saves a lot of trouble down the road.

    .

And if it has a timing belt every 100,000 miles change the timing belt. With a factory timing belt not some sub-standard after market belt.

Ok that was the easy fixes: If that doesn't work.

You might have blown a head gasket or, warped the head or burnt [bent] a valve when the engine over heated. It doesn't take much with these aluminum heads most cars are running to warp them.

    .

Also these so-called new and improved [over the ones used years ago ] will blow on you in a heart beat with the least overheating.

These new improved head gaskets are NOT like the old head gaskets that you could get an engine so hot it would almost lock up on you and not blow [ the old ] the head gaskets.

    .

Let's face the new engines might be more precision made and lighter: But when it comes to the stout department they just ain't got it compared to the older heavy lead sled engines of years past.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?i would,nt fool with the timing just now. go back over your work. are you sure the plug wires are on the right plug and the cap? what about the rotor, is it locked in place so it wont spin on it,s own? if all else fails then put number 1 piston all the way up and check the rotor. if the timing did,nt slip then the rotor should be pointing to number 1 plug wire on the cap.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?recheck your wires for proper firing of the cylinders and test the spark plug wires for proper resistance flow.

you CAN adjust the timing simply by moving the distributor cap. That's a likely culprit here. Loosen slightly, move fwd or back slightly as u do. I liked to put wheel bearing grease on the miunts to make sliding the distributor easier w/o going overboard so teh adjustments are in mm's with each push.

Lastly your air/fuel could be out of whack so hook up an OB scanner. Connection should be under the steering wheel or behind ash tray. 96 accord- do it yourself. I suggest u join some honda clubs to get better acquainted with the minor issues with specific honda owners. I have a 2007 now and still use my clubs.

If you have some properly insulated piiers then you can remove one at a time( at spark plug end) while engine is running,if engine cuts out or slows right down when you disconnect then you know that that particu;ar one is in right place, if no difference is felt when you remove on then you know you then have mixed that lead up with another. make sure that you have well insulated pliers otherwise you will get quite a kick off the lead ! wont kill you though.96 Accord V6 running rough after cap %26amp; rotor change?...Timing issue?First off, just because an engine is running a little warm does not mean that it is over heated. If the temperature gage stayed within the operating range and never went into the red area, your engine was not over heated and no additional damage occurred.

I would suspect a bad spark plug from your description. When replacing a spark plug it is very easy to crack the porcelain insulator. Sometimes the crack may not even be noticeable. This would cause the plug to not fire correctly. Evidenced by only 1 spark plug misfiring.

If you had spark plug wires mixed up 2 or more cylinders would misfire. You can not have only 1 spark plug wire out of place on the distributor cap. Re-check your firing order on the distributor cap. If you find a mistake, replace the spark plugs on the cylinders effected.

Brake pad and rotor change advice?

    Mazda astina 1991.

Mechanic says my brake pads need replacing, they are 19mm, the minimum thickness is 20mm. Should i be worried, how quick do they wear down?

My quote states x2 brake pads, one $76, the other $93. Why isn't he using the same type of pads? Also, is he assuming i want the best quality ones, should i ask for cheaper?

Plus x4 rotors, $57 each. But he told me only the fronts needs replacing. Are there 2 rotors per wheel?

    labour $130

    total AUD$530

    !!

I have not noticed any vibrating or warping. Only a put-put-put kind of shaking sometimes, when i change gears, just feels like it's a bit cold, and i'm not using the brakes at that time.

Might get another mechanic to just replace pads and check how damaged the rotors are.Brake pad and rotor change advice? From your listed prices you've been quoted cheap off-shore brake rotors. Go to: autopartswarehouse.com and invest in EBC dimpled and slotted brake rotors which are produced in Great Britain. While your at their site pick out ceramic based brake pads. Do the job yourself and save $200.00!Brake pad and rotor change advice? You really need to get another quote. Brake pad and rotor change advice?his quote is for a four wheel brake job... the pads come in sets for front and rear.... not individual wheels... even though he said the rears may be thick enough now most shops will machine them to make sure they are not warped - if there is a warp they try to machine it out and then they may be to thin... so just to cover their butt they include new ones in the estimate... there are a few shops that just replace them though so always make sure to check the bill before you pay

I do mine myself and can't machine the rotors so they just get replaced... depending on how you drive they should last 20,000 to 40,000 miles... if they can be machined at that point then you may get more out of them... hope this helps and good luck with itBrake pad and rotor change advice? You are a dangerous breed my friend. Thank GOD you pile of junk is in another country as not to present a danger here.

20mm is spec and your at 19mm... Here if your involved in an accident and your car is inspected and found to be lacking in the brake area you get charged with criminal negligence.

The estimate is in the ballpark.

How to change rotors on a 2001 kia rio?

If you have a KIA Rio you should change cars not rotors.

How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?

I am in the middle of my brake and rotor replacement project and I am stuck - literally! I got the calipers off and I know that you turn those bolts to the right (despite the righty tighty lefty loosy rule). When I take the bolts out to remove the rotors, do I turn the bolt to the right or left? My brakes were GONE so the bolts are pretty much burnt into place with brake dust and I want to be sure I'm turning them the right way. It took me 20 minutes and a whole lot of elbow grease just to get my calipers off! I don't want to strip my bolts and end up having to drill them out.

-Oh, and yeah I am a girl who LOVES cars. I'm trying to do this myself. I want to do this without having to call my dad for help. I have something to prove. I want to go to the Nascar Technical Institute and work on race cars, maybe even drive one one day. I know what I'm doing, It's just been 7 years and 2 kids since I've done this. I do have 2 years of auto mechanic training. Sorry if this is a stupid question. My book for my car isn't here and my brakes went out so I can't go get it. I know what I'm doing, I just need a little reminder on HOW, PLEASE?!?How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?Im guessing you removed the caliper and left the bracket in place? And now your trying to get the bracket off? Most likely you wont be able to do it with just a 1/2 in drive, your going to need a bar to put on the end to get more leverage(breaker bar) I had to use it on my a couple months ago. I think the drivers side you push the bar down(towards the ground) and passenger your push up(towards the top). How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?Take the nuts off the wheels. Remove the tires. ratchet and socket and remove bolt from back of caliper on both sides slide up and off. The brake pads slide right out on both sides. and then pull rotor straight towards you and off. Reverse process to put back on.How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?Mike is right, 1/2 will work just use what is called a cheater bar! It's 2' pipe about 30-40%26quot; long slip over the ratchet/breakerbar, and pry away. It will make the job so easy, it's leverage! How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?Every rotor I have ever replaced was just slipped on over the lugs, and didn't require removing any bolts (after you take off the calipers of course).

If yours are bolted on, then you might want to get some rust buster and spray it on the bolts. Let it soak in really good, and then try popping them loose again.

Good luck - and I think it's awesome that you are a girl who wants to work on cars!!

If there is no screw then spray the hub area with rust penetrant the get your BFH and give it a good whack in the hub area not the part that contacts the brakes avoid hitting the studs also. Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?

    Hi,

I just got front brake rotor changed for my toyota camry 96 and the service station charged me 260$ for that (labor =119 and part = 139). I wanted to know if that was overpriced? how much on an average a front brake (disk) rotor change would cost.

ThanksFront brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced? The price is not out of reason if they had to change your rotors.

Typical costs for brakes: $30-$40. Rotors typically cost $50-$75/per rotor and I'm assuming you replaced both of them.

Labor charge for the brake job should be 1-1.5 hrs. Again $119 is not out of line.

So I'd say no I think that would be typically what you would expect to pay for a brake job requiring that the rotors be changed.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced? It sure seems high.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?I would go on one of the auto parts stores websites like AutoZone.com, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA auto parts, PartsAmerica.com or any one of hundreds of websites selling %26quot;Toyota Auto Parts%26quot; (search Yahoo). Then fill in your car's year, make, model etc and check the cost of front brake rotors. Of course if the Toyota dealer did the brake job, the dealer parts cost will be higher by say 50%, but if you find they're charging 3 times as much compared to a name brand aftermarket rotor you price out, I'd take that price quote printout to the service manager and ask if they made a mistake on your parts charges. Also, you could go to any other Toyota dealer's parts counter and ask them how much it is for a brake rotor for your car.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?that price seems about right, I would hope they replaced both rotors or resurfaced one side and replaced the other though. and put new pads on. I would have charge ya 127.50 in labor, 58.22 for pads and resuraced the rotors would be included, if you had to have a rotor, then I would I guess they would run about 80.00 bucks.

How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?

car broke down and been told it needs changing, is it simple enough to do my self? How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?Yes this is simple as long as you are careful....

An old trick to imobilise a car was to remove the rotor arm...

The distributer cap is usually black or grey and looks like the bottom of a large Coke bottle.

The HT Leads come out of the distributer and connect to each spark plug.

There sould only be a couple of clips on each side holding the top on.

If you take it off you will see the rotor arm. It looks like a small handle and spins round to the contacts for each spark plug etc..

    If should just lift off.

In order to get a replacement check with somewhere like halfords or look up a haynes manual for your model car and the engine that you have.

It is important the you get the right one.

Good luck !How do i change my rotor arm on a vauxhall 1994 corsa?i think u just take of the distributor cap and replace the rotor arm inside. dont take of the ht leads incase u mix them up putting back on. just unclip the clips and take off cap with leads attacthed

Where can I find a manual on how to change rotors on a Chrysler?

Changing rotors is pretty easy and fairly standard on all makes and models. You can search for it on the internet and I am sure you can find some steps with photos on how to do it.

It is pretty easy if you have the right tools, just remove the tire, use a socket to remove the caliper which holds the brake pads and then you slid or tap the worn rotor off.

However, if you are changing the rotor ensure you get new brake pads as the older pads even though look good may cause premature wear on you new rotor or warp it.

If you change the brake pads ensure you have a C-clamp to push in the piston(s) back into the caliper to place the pads into. Then just slip the caliper in place and tighten up the bolts holding the caliper in place. Pull off brake line to caliper and have someone pump the brake a few times till you see nice clean brake fluid. Replace the brake line and place on tire and you are basically good to go!Where can I find a manual on how to change rotors on a Chrysler?Depending on the year you might find one at the local auto parts store. I have a 1997 ford explorer ..I know how to change the pads but how do i change the rotor?Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?once the wheel is off and you have removed the caliper and break pads the is two anchor bolts that hold the caliper mount on. After that the rotor comes right off. The only thing that keeps the rotor on is your rim and lug nuts. The bearings will not come off. They are inside the hub.Well I really want to know how to change a brake rotor?Remove the pads, take off the caliper anchor 2 bolts, remove grease cap, pull out cotter pin, undo nut, and pull out rotor, being careful to catch the outer wheel bearing in your hand. Then take off the rotor (2 bolts). Easy as pie. I think its easier than changing oil if you ask me.How hard is it to change rotors on a 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser if I have never changed rotors before?Simple. Remove the calipers and brake pads and the rotors should come right off. If they've never been off before, there may be a clip over one of the wheel studs holding it on. Those can be pried off and discarded.

  • How often do i need to change rotors for my car?

I have a 2003 mercedes. today i took my car for brake service. i only have 33000 miles on my car. all i needed was front brake pads. so the service guy now tells me that i will need front and back rotors also which amounts to over 1 thousand dollars because they say my rotors are completely worn out. I drive mostly freeways and never really brake hard or anything? could it be true? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Your first mistake was to take your car in for brake service.

First get your car out of there. At home, jack up your car, take each wheel off and inspect the rotors. They will be right there in front of your face. Inspect your brake pads too. They should have at least 1.5mm on each side left of %26quot;meat%26quot;. Replace them if they don't. They cost around $7.50 for each wheel.

Run your hand over the rotors. They should be smooth without grooves or a high lip on the outside. A minor lip is ok. The rotors may be ventilated (have holes in them), and that's ok.

If you have grooves or a high lip, the rotor needs to be turned (resurfaced). Remove the rotor after removing the brake caliper. It will pull straight off. Take the rotor to an autoparts store and they will turn the rotor for about $10. If you have 4 bad ones, that will cost you $40. If the rotor is particularly bad, sometimes the store will not resurface them. Or maybe you can't find a place to do it. Or maybe you want to save even more money.

Take the rotor home, jack up the entire drive end of your car with both wheels off the ground. Jack each side, insert a jackstand, and then do the other side.

Put the rotor back on the spindle and secure it with the lug nuts. Don't put the wheel on yet. Start the car, put it in drive, and let the drive rotors rotate (turn) in the air. Take a belt sander and resurface the rotors as they are spinning. Wala, you saved an additional $10 per wheel. If the rotor is not from a drive wheel or the non-drive rotor will not fit the drive spindle, then you can mount the rotor on some other rotary table (like a record player) or mechanism and use the belt sander.

Sorry, but if you pay $1000 for new rotors, I will personally come over there and slap you.How often do i need to change rotors for my car?does not sound right....why can't the rotors be turned? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Get a second opinion, it doesn't sound right. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? That guy is tring to rip you off, at the most the rotors may need turned, Take it somewhere elseHow often do i need to change rotors for my car?hes ******* with you. No way you wore out rotors in 30k unless youre doing alot of heavy racing. usually they last 100k+ miles. You can get em turned if theyre badly rutted. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Rotors don't last nearly as long as they used to because they outlawed asbestos brake pads. Asbestos brake pads used to take the wear; the semi-metallic pads and ceramic pads today wear the rotor down more. It's not entirely unbelievable that they could need new rotors. Of course, rotors for most cars cost under $50 apiece, so check the parts stores to see if you can get cheaper replacement rotors.

Also, it's likely that, although the rotors may be worn out of spec, they will work fine if you just replace the pads....problem is, the mercedes dealer won't do it, because, if the rotors are out of spec, they would be liable if anything happened, plus they couldn't warranty it. So if you can do a brake job yourself (it's really not that difficult, if you have a repair manual) just put new brake pads on and don't even worry about the rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Sound like these joker are taking you to the bank. At 33k it should be your first brake change and only require rotor to be turn to give new brakes pad a fresh surface to mate on. Also, at that low mileage there should be plenty of meat(metal) to allow them to turn the rotor.

I'm a cheap person so I take my chances and just place new pad on without turning the rotors. also, i put lots of brake lube on back of pad to keep them quiet. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Have him give you a written estimate detailing every part he is going to change, and make sure he includes labor and hazardous waste removal, which he will have to charge you for, and then go get a second estimate like the other responders stated. After you get one and maybe for more proof a second estimate, contact the States Attorney for your state. This guy is definitely looking at making some quick money from you or someone. You can also look up the price of rotors by using www.advanceautoparts.com or any auto parts store. You can also contact the Mercedes dealer and see what they charge for the rotors. Most garages charge upwards of 50.00 per hour labor. I am unsure of your car, however most rotors can be changed in one hour per wheel, so figure at least 2 hours labor.

If your rotors wear out in 33,000 miles, you need to get a different vehicle. I have a 94 Ford truck that has been driven almost daily for over 3 years with my wife and I together running it over 65,000 miles and I still have not had to change the rotors. I have had the pads changed twice, but no rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? There is no mileage recommendation on replacing rotors, when being serviced, they are measured with a micrometer for minimum thickness, if they are below this specification then they need to be replaced. On some domestic cars and trucks, the rotors are very thick in relation to the minimum spec and can be machined 2 or three times before replacing but I have found on Mercedes-Benz that this is not always true, and also they use a hard semi-metallic pad that wears rotors out even faster. If you are in doubt of the honesty of your mechanic, then a second opinion is helpful, and then you can ask him these questions: What is the minimum thickness? What are my rotors measuring? Can you show me? This will keep them honest. Also, if one side is worn and the other o.k., This can indicate other problems like calipers sticking or something.

How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?

Im replacing the front rotors on my girlfriends jeep, and iv gotten the calipers off...now shouldnt the rotor slide right off the hub? or do i need to mess with the big bolt in the center of the rotor? You know the one thats got a pin in it?How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?Nope, your going to need a BFH (big ------- hammer), and do some swinging. These rotors will almost break before you get them off, mine actually broke while removing them. They will %26quot;just slide off%26quot; after they are loosened from the hub, but be prepared to fight them all the way.

These rotors are hubless rotors, meaning they do not have a wheel bearing hub in them. They simply rest on the wheel bearing hub. The large nut at the center holds the axle in, not the rotor. How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?no! just beat on the backside of it with a rubber hammer and it should come off. it might be stuck so keep beating. donot mess with that bolt, it has nothing to do with the rotor comming off!How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport? In addition to above answer, LIGHTLY spray penetrating oil at the junction of the rotor and the center hub. Do not take or touch the axle bolt!! Leave it a small while and it will come off with a LIGHT tap. Beating on it too hard can crack a Cast Iron rotor or warp it.

    Good Luck

DO NOT LISTEN TO RETIRED_US_NAVY_COMMAN.... The rotors are NOT part of the hub and bearing assembly!!How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?Remove the pin from the center of the hub nut in the center of the rotor. Remove the hub nut. The rotor should then slide right off. If not, use a soft face hammer, and tap each side from the back to loosen it, then slide it off. When reinstalling the rotors, don't forget to pack the bearings in the center of the rotor, with axle grease. Reinstall the hub nut, and tighten until snug, then reinstall the pin.
